Drake Hillel is unique because it is completely student-run. We do not have a Hillel staff or Rabbi, nor a Hillel house. But we look at this in a positive way because everything is up to the students. Our Hillel Board consists of 10 student positions and a faculty advisor. We have Shabbat dinners every other Friday night. For all Jewish holidays and Shabbat, students can get rides to local synagogues. Some events that we have had this year and in the past are Pizza in the Sukkah, break the fast for Yom Kippur, campus-wide Hanukkah party, dodgeball tournament to raise money for a charity, student-led Passover sedar, Shabbatons with the University of Iowa and Iowa State University, etc. About 20-30 students are active and come to our events. There are about 70 students on our e-mail list. Many of the Jewish families in Des Moines invite students over for Shabbat dinners and holidays. Although there is no Kosher option in the Drake cafeteria, there is a Kosher deli in Des Moines with great sandwiches! We have a lot of fun at Hillel and hope you will consider coming to Drake!!
