Occidental College Hillel is a student-run organization serving the Occidental College students, faculty and staff, in addition to the surrounding community. In addition to sponsoring outings to Jewish attractions across the Los Angeles basin and holding programs catering to the variety of interests of the Jewish student population, we hold luncheons every Tuesday, and have Shabbats every friday evening. Hillel works from its own office in the campus interfaith center, and is partially funded by the Soref Foundation in addition to the Los Angeles Hillel Council. Oxy Hillel also serves as a source of information for students who are interested in pursuing Judaism-related careers, opportunities in Israel, and pretty much anything else that is requested. Most of all, Oxy Hillel is foremost a community in which Jews can congregate to "do Jewish". Occidental offers another club called "Yalla" which was founded by several students specifically for Israel-related activities. Yalla has been integral in increasing the awareness of Israeli-related events through such activities as leading legislative actions such as letter writing campaigns, and by bringing in well-known speakers. While Occidental does not have a kosher kitchen, food can be made to-order in order to try to avoid conflicts with Kashrut. The department of Campus Dining does an excellent job preparing Kosher meals for high-holidays.
