When Hillel Montreal community friends Robyn and David Amiel offered to sponsor the building of neighborhood sukkahs, Executive Director & CEO Jeff Bicher knew that the “Sukkah Squad” would be a great fit for the Hillel’s Social Action/Tzedek initiative.
Interested sukkah recipients contacted Hillel Montreal after seeing an ad in the Canadian Jewish News and hearing about the initiative through social media. Over the course of three days, Hillel Montreal students and staff built fifteen sukkahs, at homes in Chomedey, Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Saint Laurent, Cote Saint Luc and Montreal. A sixteenth was built on the grounds of Dawson College.
Caroline Levine, Engagement Associate at Hillel Montreal, shares, "At one of the houses in Ville Saint Laurent, the 6-year old daughter stayed outside with us the whole time; she was so excited to see a sukkah being built in her backyard. She had been making decorations for the sukkah for a few days already and was eager to put them up. The families who received the sukkahs were all overjoyed and thankful. Seeing their appreciation and the smiles on their faces really made the whole thing worth it."
