Explore Elon University Hillel

Why is Elon Hillel special? Because our students know that even when they are far from their own houses, they have a home at the Sklut Hillel Center. Jewish Life at Elon University supports students journeys, no matter the destination. We are a welcoming, lively, and inclusive community that provides an empowering, innovative, and joyful Jewish experience for all students; inspires discovery and ownership of personal identity; prepares students for life beyond college as leaders and community members; and embraces the dynamic diversity of Jewish traditions. Hillel at Elon is dynamic, student-run, and student-centered. We are open to all Jewish students from all backgrounds. Our students are leaders, organizers, and educators. They are empowered to make Jewish connections, take initiative, and find their own place within a diverse, vibrant, and welcoming community of their peers. We engage 100% of first-year students who self-identify as Jewish with our cohort program, and our vibrant community has been recognized for excellence by numerous national publications. All Jewish students are welcome and encouraged to participate in our diverse range of programs, as together we celebrate our own traditions and learn about others.  Elon Hillel is an integral part of campus life. We embrace multi-faith initiatives through the Truitt Center for Religious & Spiritual Life, and maintain close partnerships with the Elon Community Garden, Admissions, University Development, the Kernodle Center for Service Learning and the Multicultural Center.

Elon opened "Green World," an all-access dining option in Colonnades. Green World provides vegan/vegetarian dining using pots and pans which are only used for vegan and vegetarian food. Paper plates & disposable cutlery is available. The kitchen and dining room are not under rabbinic supervision, but Hillel staff and Professor (Rabbi) Geoffrey Claussen have met with Aramark staff and reviewed recipes, ingredients, and food preparation procedures. The Sklut Hillel Center is set up with a clear separation of meat and dairy foods. The main kitchen is meat-free; the outdoor grill is used for preparing meat. Students are welcome to cook and eat at the Hillel Center.

Religious Services

Jewish students at Elon University have the opportunity to celebrate the holidays together, in a welcoming environment. Elon Hillel offers a meaningful Shabbat celebration every week; a place in time for community, food, and spirituality. Some Fridays, the entire community gathers for a fun social meal, preceded by prayers and blessings. Other weeks are marked by Kabbalat Shabbat services led by students. We also offer a family-style, cozy Table for Chai gathering where we break bread and share thoughts and moments of meaning. Our prayer services represent the vibrant spectrum of Judaism on our campus, and Jewish students at Elon observe and celebrate together.

What it’s like to be a Jewish university student today: Mandi’s Story

The recent attacks in Israel have shocked the Jewish community across the nation. At Elon Hillel, we are processing, grieving, and sticking up for our community. As a student leader in the Jewish community, I want to offer comforting and empowering spaces and opportunities for my fellow students, while also dealing with the emotional trauma of losing friends, wondering whether other friends are alive, and watching my people get raped, murdered, and kidnapped.

The Hillel College Guide aims to provide you with a snapshot of each local Hillel’s makeup and offerings. We recognize that there may be more information you need in order to better understand the campus reality, particularly around issues of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.
