Macalester College

As an integral part of Macalester’s multifaith Center for Religious and Spiritual Life (which centers worldview exploration as an essential part of global citizenship), Jewish life at Macalester is student-created, lively, quirky, and centers on kindness.  Our 150+ Jewish students come from all over the U.S. and beyond, bringing with them and exploring many dimensions (cultural, religious, artistic, linguistic, musical, textual, culinary, etc.) of Jewish identity and practice.  The student-led Macalester Jewish Organization meets weekly in the Center for Religious and Spiritual Life for schmoozing, twice monthly for Shabbat services and dinner, and throughout the year for holidays and anything else folks want to create.While Macalester does not have a kosher dining facility, students prepare vegetarian Shabbat dinners year-round and kasher the Center for Religious and Spiritual Life kitchen for Passover to create a kosher-dairy Passover co-op. Jewish studies at Macalester includes coursework within Religious Studies, History, Classical Mediterranean and Middle East, and other disciplines; a two-year Hebrew language sequence begins every other fall. For more information, check Macalester’s Jewish Life page or contact Rabbi Emma Kippley-Ogman at [email protected].Additional Information on Religious Services: Macalester Jewish Organization’s twice monthly student-led Shabbat services are a participatory, songful opportunity to connect in community (including for folks who have never come to Jewish services before), and are followed by a student-prepared, vegetarian Shabbat dinner.  Students also lead High Holiday services, Passover seders, and a Purim Megillah reading, build a Sukkah, and light Hanukkah candles together.
