After a turbulent school year when antisemitism on campus often took center stage, many Jewish college students and their families are feeling more anxious than ever about the upcoming year.

That’s where Hillel comes in.

Across the United States and Canada, Hillel staff are getting ready to welcome first-year Jewish students to campus — and remind them that no matter what happens, Hillel is there to provide a vibrant, welcoming, and safe Jewish campus community. That starts from the first moment students set foot on campus. From early move-in opportunities, to welcome week barbecues and block parties, and first Shabbat dinners, there are hundreds of back-to-school programs planned for Jewish students at college and university Hillels.

“The first few weeks of the academic year are critical in connecting with students and beginning to understand what students are most passionate about, what they are looking for in their college experience, and helping to establish Hillel as an important resource,” said Andy Gitelson, a Hillel International campus support director. “While the events vary, what is key is the opportunity for Hillel to begin building relationships, and sharing information on how we can support students.”

Here’s a peek at just a few of the upcoming events students can look forward to this fall.

Camp WaJew (University of Virginia)

Camp WaJew is a two-night program for first year Jewish students at UVA, aimed at helping them build community and connection to Jewish life before classes begin. They’ll move in early and participate in a camp-style retreat. It’s a chance for students to meet each other, relax, and get a last bit of summer fun before the school year kicks off.

Shabbat Welcome Dinner (California State University at San Marcos)

This event offers a double celebration — the start of a new school year and a brand-new program space. Students can join Hillel for Shabbat food, get to know each other, and learn about Jewish life at CSUSM. The gathering is designed to be a relaxed evening where students can connect, share their own Shabbat traditions, unwind, and establish new relationships.

OSU Fresh Fest (Ohio State University)

Freshman are moving in early for the first time at Ohio State, so Hillel is providing fun, food, and programming to help students to make friends in a Jewish space. The multi-day event will include Shabbat and Havdalah experiences, as well as coffee, bagels, and tours of the Hillel building — and some limited-edition OSU swag.

Gefilte Fish Camp (Texas A&M University)

Texas A&M Hillel’s Gefilte Fish Camp brings first-year students together to build their networks, connect with the Hillel team, and create new friendships through fun social experiences like ice cream meet-ups, BBQs, and spending time together at Texas A&M’s gorgeous lake. It’s a chance for students to begin making relationships, learn how Hillel can support them in getting involved on campus, and start forming the friendships that will last the rest of their college years.
